EXTENSION HOME CARE

Taking care of extensions is not the same as maintaining regular hair. I want to make it as easy as possible for my clients to look after their hair extensions, so I developed the handy cheat sheet below. In order to enjoy and maintain your new hair for as long as possible, it is essential that you are aware of the following maintenance guidelines (a downloadable PDF can be found at the end):

brushing

I recommend using a wet brush daily to remove any knots and tangles:

Gather the hair into a ponytail and securely hold it close to the scalp.

Begin brushing from the ends, carefully working your way up towards the scalp.

Brushing your hair before it gets wet will keep it from tangling while washing.

washing

Now that you have so much hair, I suggest splitting your hair into sections to wet and shampoo it thoroughly.

ALWAYS use sulfate and paraben-free shampoo.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND:

  • any strengthening or bonding shampoo and/or conditioner.

  • any moisturizing shampoo and/or conditioner

Always apply conditioner from mid-shaft down to the tips of your hair and leave on for 2-3 minutes. Adding conditioner to the base can lead to slipping.

Make sure you rinse completely.

products

Always communicate to your stylist what products you will be using on your extensions. I have many options and recommendations for all budgets.

Avoid alcohol-based products at the base of your extensions. This may cause unwanted sliding.

swimming

Prior to swimming, it's recommended that you wet your hair with tap water, apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner to the ends, and tie your hair in a ponytail or braid.

Once you're finished swimming, rinse your hair with fresh water and apply leave-in conditioner again.

sleeping

Gently brush and loosely braid your hair before sleeping.

DO NOT go to bed with wet extensions.

drying

Towel or air dry your hair as much as possible prior to blow drying your hair.

When using leave-in conditioners, heat protectants, or any treatment oils make sure you are applying them from mid-shaft to ends.

styling tools

The extensions that I apply are safe when using flat irons, curling wands, and crimpers.

I highly suggest using heat protectants before styling.

Make sure you keep all heating elements away from the extension's point of attachment. This will ensure your extensions do not melt or fuse together
